During a recent checkup, my dentist said, “You’ve got great teeth.”
“I always have,” I replied. “In the mid-1990s, my dentist told me that these were the best 40-year-old teeth he’d ever seen.”
Dr. K. raised his eyebrows. “Well, your teeth are still better than any 40-year-old teeth I’ve ever seen.”
So, now that I’m getting “long in the tooth,” I’ve decided it’s high time to honor my roots. 😊
My mother and grandmother were both dental hygienists, and my uncle and grandfather were both dentists, so good habits, if not good teeth, run in the family. Mom said she had a mouthful of fillings by the time she entered high school, because she loved sugar.
From the time I grew my first tooth, my mother told me that “Sugar is yucky,” and I believed her. I didn’t feel angry when I finally learned that sweets, in fact, taste delightful. By that time, she’d made her point. I still don’t drink soda pop.
So, on this weekend, which would have been Mom’s 97th birthday, I’ll simply pass along her advice:
Take care of your teeth and they’ll take care of you.
Brush after every meal, moving the brush up and down more than back and forth.
Brush your gums.
Floss daily.
SMILE!!!!
