Nightmare on Main Street

We are just about a week away from Halloween, my least favorite holiday, especially this year. I’ve been watching in horror over the past twenty-two months as the country I thought I knew falls apart. America has never been perfect, but for much of our history we’ve been at least trying to live up to the founders’ ideals. Apparently, that is no longer a thing.

I don’t need to provide an itemized list here. A quick check of the news on any given day handles that task quite ably. Put the days, weeks, and months together and the pattern falls into place. It’s not pretty. I don’t know if we have reached the point of no return. I do know that I don’t recognize America any more.

All I see is hate, greed, and chaos; politicians playing the blame game, name-calling and other behaviors decent folks used to frown upon. My parents and our ancestors must all be turning over in their graves.

Few ordinary citizens seem to be calling it out, even as they grumble about no longer being able to make ends meet. Perhaps some people feel helpless, like me. Others express cynicism, distrust, or anger. I haven’t yet met a single individual who is happy about the way things are in the United States today. But for the moment, anyway, I haven’t lost all hope. In less than two weeks we should have an inkling of where we go from here.

Meanwhile, I did the one thing I have the ability to do: I voted. I hope you do, too.
