After the Storm

Last weekend’s much-hyped ice storm was a dud at our house, thankfully, but it did make considerable mischief in surrounding counties. I am glad to hear that electric service is now restored to most everyone in those areas.

Folks who have lived around here for a long time weren’t surprised that our county was mostly spared. We live in a basin surrounded by mountains, and those peaks greatly affect micro weather patterns. The meteorological map showed most of North Carolina shaded in pink, indicating ice, but a 20-mile-diameter circle displayed much of the southwesternmost two counties in green, representing rain. Our home sat right in the middle of that green. We are thankful.

Another winter storm barreled into the state last night, for the second weekend in a row—a rarity in this part of the country. The air is much colder now, and this time, it arrived as snow. It’s the kind of storm I used to gripe about when we lived in Nebraska, but since we don’t see much wintry precipitation here, I’m thoroughly enjoying the view from my window.

The roads aren’t so great, but I don’t need to go anywhere. Our preparations last week were more than sufficient. Retirement is peachy.
