August is American Artist Appreciation Month, during which we celebrate the creativity and cultural impact of our homegrown talent. Mural is an art form, as is writing. Our local library found a way to honor both. Kudos!
The sheer volume and variety of artistic talent in this little corner of Southern Appalachia never ceases to amaze me. Visual and tactile artists, musicians, dancers, authors, poets, playwrights, actors, photographers, storytellers. . . the list goes on and on.
And the venues! There is something artsy happening every week, in nearly every corner of the community. From the big stages at Hayesville’s Peacock Performing Arts Center and the Festival Barn at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, to the more intimate “Open Mic” gatherings at the Corner Coffee and Wine Shop on the Hayesville Square and featured events on the Cherokee Arts Council’s headquarters in Murphy, there’s quite literally something for everyone. I know I’ve neglected to mention many other worthy venues. If you live around these parts and you are bored, it’s your own fault! 😊
Today, and every day, I’m thankful to have landed in this little piece of paradise.
