Learning to Publish

 April 30, 2021

Writing is easy for me. Technology is not. Take this blog, for instance. I started it back in October, but struggled trying to figure out how to build it. Now I have some semblance of a web page, but I’m not certain I’ve done it correctly. I haven’t been able to figure out how to remove the date from my pinned post at the top. Despite that, I’ll give going live a shot soon, and keep my fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, I’ve been busy finishing the manuscript of my first book, My Mother’s Keeper: One Family’s Journey through Dementia. This book is totally unlike anything else I plan to publish. I’m a forester, and I like to write about the natural world. But this is a memoir. It’s about humans. And I believe it is a story worth telling. Take a look at the description in the ‘My Mother’s Keeper’ tab.

I found an editor to help me set it up for self-publishing, and now I’m working with an artist to design a cover. I’ve been told that in order to sell my book, I’ll need to have a ‘platform’— whatever that is. As far as I know, I don’t have one of those, and I have no idea how to build one. I’ve got a lot to learn.
