Veterans Day Project Takes on a Life of Its Own

This handsome young man is my favorite veteran, my late father, George David Geib, who served as a pilot for the US Army Air Force during World War II. The picture shows his sister, Marie, pinning his wings after he graduated from training in June 1944.

For the past several weeks I’ve been converting to text the PDFs of my dad’s letters home during the war. He transcribed those letters in 1994 and filled 350+ pages, which he took to a quick print shop and made a few copies for family and friends. As a tribute to Dad, I’ve decided to formally publish the collection. I hope to have this part of the project finished by Thanksgiving, when I’ll send it to my publisher, who will format it and insert the graphics. I’ve been able to save some of his original images in reproducible form, but for those that are too grainy, I’ll substitute some photos from his wartime photo album. It’s turning out to be a bigger project than I anticipated, but I’m aiming for a 2024 publication date, thanks to a wonderful hybrid publisher I’ve found, https://www.whwaxpublishing.com/.

I’ll keep you posted on our progress!
